People with Type 2 Diabetes in Counties Manukau are being encouraged to visit their doctor for a free check up as part of the Get Checked programme.

People with Type 2 Diabetes in Counties Manukau are being encouraged to visit their doctor for a free check up as part of the Get Checked programme.

In 2007/8, a record number of 14,400 people took up the offer of a free annual check in Counties Manukau. However, current research shows that there are now approximately 27,000 people with Type 2 Diabetes in Counties Manukau.

“It is very important that all people with Diabetes take up the opportunity of their free check,” says Dr Brandon Orr Walker, Clinical Director of the Let’s Beat Diabetes Programme. “Diabetes is a silent disease. Serious damage can occur without any obvious pain or symptoms so people need to show up to their doctor even if they are managing the condition and feeling well. If you are feeling good, you still need to go.”

Showing up early and having regular check ups are vital part in managing the condition and delaying the onset of complications associated with Diabetes, such as nerve damage which could lead to blindness and amputations. People with Diabetes also have a higher risk of heart attacks.

The free visit is available to people with diabetes once ever 12 months and patients should ask for their ‘Free Get Checked’ visit when making their appointment with the GP.
