About Us

Unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, smoking and the misuse of alcohol place a heavy burden of disease on communities in Counties Manukau. These factors lead to a significant number of people living with, and dying from:
- type 2 diabetes
- cardiovascular disease (angina, heart attacks and stroke)
- smoking-related lung disease (chronic bronchitis and emphysema)
- many cancers
Because of these diseases, many people in our community live with ill health or die before their time. Unless we all take action now and start making healthier choices, this is only expected to get worse.
Creating a Better Future is the long-term strategy from the Counties Manukau District Health Board and community partners which aims to prevent these diseases and improve the health of those people who are already living with them.
We know that eating healthier food, doing more physical activity, watching what you drink and becoming smokefree are hard changes to make. But we also believe that by making better choices, we can reduce the impact these diseases have on our community.
So let’s Create a Better Future together, today.
The Creating a Better Future Strategic Plan and Operational Plan 2010/2011 are available here.
Creating a Better Future has evolved from the Let’s Beat Diabetes initiative, which focused on diabetes prevention in Counties Manukau. The Let’s Beat Diabetes website can be found here.
