Breast is Best

August 2010

Did you know more than 8000 babies will be welcomed into the world in Counties Manukau this year?

It is important that these babies get the best possible start to life, including the opportunity to be breastfed.

Breastfeeding has many benefits for both a new baby and its mother. It is the healthiest option for babies, can help build their immunity (meaning they will be less likely to get sick) and is a free source of food. It is a great way for a mother and baby to bond.

The Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) supports parents to make an informed choice about how to feed their baby but also believes that breastfeeding is best. Women who give birth at Middlemore Hospital or any of the three Primary Maternity Units in the community will be supported to breastfeed by trained staff throughout their stay.

Midwives are available before and after birth to answer questions about breastfeeding. Mothers will be helped with feeds, especially their baby’s first feed, and be shown how to express their milk. When it is time to leave, they will be told who to call for breastfeeding support and be visited at home by a midwife within 24 hours.

Through its Creating a Better Future strategy, the CMDHB is also looking to improve breastfeeding rates through increased access to specialised breastfeeding support as well as supporting increased knowledge and understanding by the health workforce.
